Culture & History
Traces of early habitation date back to as early as 3000 BC then came the Greeks and Phoenicians followed by the Romans. The Moorish occupation preceded the demise of the Knights Templar and the War of the Spanish Succession in the early 1700’s was interspersed by marauding North African pirates. The Island was part of a busy trade route and each conquering force left their mark and some of their identity behind. The now quiet, peaceful and often slow pace of life on the Island has been a magnet to artists, sculptors, musicians and writers for generations; all come to gather inspiration from this small piece of paradise in the middle of the Mediterranean.
